Today, Phillip Campbell (aka Boniface) of Unam Sanctam Catholicam joins us to talk about the history of the Middle Ages, and why most people, traditional Catholics in particular, who have romantic notions of medieval life, would positively hate it. Not to dissuade one from study or admiring the Middle Ages, this conversation about medieval life is aimed at painting an accurate picture of it. Join us, as we dig into the nitty gritty of the middle ages.

There are some points in the podcast where profanities are used demonstratively, as in medievals used the word in a title of this or that and we repeated it. Moreover there will be frank discussion of medieval views about sex and modesty and weird perverted things.  There will also be cool medieval music in Latin about bawdy subjects which would could not understand probably. If that offends you, or you thought this would be good for your younger kids, we give fair warning, you will not be happy.

    I think the case of Phillip II of France and Queen Ingaborg shows how difficult it was to get a bogus annulment in the Middle Ages. Sure, Alexander VI (during the Renaissance) did apparently throw Joan of Valois under the bus, but that seems to me to be the exception to the rule of a consistent papal defense of the sanctity of marriage — and it required that Louis XII perjure himself first, and, besides, we’re talking about Alexander VI.

    On the “in nomine patria”. It shows up in Denzinger! Oh, and it was valid. And really early on.

    297 For they have reported that there was a priest in that province, who was so completely ignorant of the Latin language that when he was baptizing, because of his ignorance of the Latin speech, breaking up the language, said: “Baptizo te in nomine Patria et Filia et Spiritus Sancti.” And on account of this your honored brotherhood has considered rebaptizing. But . . . if that one who baptized, not introducing an error or a heresy, but through mere ignorance of the Roman speech by breaking up the language, baptizing he said, as we mentioned above, we do not agree that they should be baptized a second time.

    I cannot say how much I have loved this series. Every traditionalist or conservative Catholic who loves the Middle Ages should listen. You have both done a great service here. For what it’s worth, I tried to address mistaken medieval romanticism in on my own blog once:

    I wonder if modern Africa provides a good analogy for medieval Christendom. Many of the people of sub-Saharan Africa seem to be piously Catholic, yet their countries are plagued by corruption, sexual promiscuity, superstition, and occasionally by genocidal violence. But while these vices exist, the people also seem to have a healthy revulsion for ideologies that would *promote* the vices. The official standards are largely correct.

    The only complaint I’ve got about what’s said here is that he overgeneralizes. The Middle Ages lasted nearly a millennium; it’s not like there was a uniformity of praxis throughout. For example, the In nomine patria thing was, I believe, brought up in the textbook mentioned as an example specific to its time and place, pre-Carolingian Francia. Likewise with geographical uniformity — medieval Italy or Byzantium were rather different than, say, places peopled by those who in Roman times would’ve been considered barbarians, placed like England, Scandinavia, or northern France and Germany.

    Because the discussion is a survey, generalization is probably unavoidable, but I would’ve liked greater acknowledgement of the diversity of the medieval era.
